A Word from our Board Chair, Jean Raymond Théorêt, Ph.D.

École de théologie évangélique du Québec (ETEQ) is a university level theological training institution resulting from the merger of the École de théologie évangélique de Montréal (ETEM) and the Institut biblique V.I.E. (IBVIE).

The Board of Directors of ETEQ is pleased to announce that Dr. John (Jean) Martin, PhD, has been appointed Interim President effective July 1st, 2019.

Jean Martin is currently the Academic Dean of ETEQ. Previously, he was President of IBVIE (1998-2016) and Academic Dean of ETEM-IBVIE during the preparation period for the merger (2011-2016). Jean is a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance, one of the two evangelical denominations that make up the ETEQ corporation.

As President of IBVIE, Jean participated in the discussions and work that led to the administrative merger of ETEM and IBVIE to create École de théologie évangélique du Québec (ETEQ), of which he became the first Academic Dean in 2016. In this function, he led the implementation of academic programs that contribute to the realization of ETEQ’s mission:”[to be] a school... in service to Christian communities, in order to equip men and women to serve Christ in the changing context of Quebec and the world.”  This year, about 100 students are enrolled in the programs offered by ETEQ, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

The Board of Directors invited Jean to continue to implement ETEQ’s strategic plan adopted in 2018. In the interim, the Board will continue to search for a candidate with a somewhat reduced sense of urgency which should ensure staying on course while preparing the required succession for the long term.

As Jean is well known in the theological education community in Quebec, his presence as interim President will allow ETEQ to continue to develop its relationships with its academic partners.
